Many people grew up with uninspiring kitchen cabinet doors. Most were framed slabs of imitation wood that would stand up to the warmth and humidity of the kitchen without warping. But dreary kitchen cabinet doors are going the way of the cold fluorescent rods and rings that used to light the room. Here are some ideas for creative custom cabinet doors to consider for your kitchen.

Cabinet Doors With Mesh Panels

One way to make your kitchen cabinets stand out is to have them made with central panels of mesh or a latticework of metal, wood or a wood substitute. The mesh can be so fine that you can’t see through it or as ornate as the latticework found in the Islamic architectural element called a mashrabiya. Some homeowners use poultry netting, which can be surprisingly attractive, especially in cabinets with a rustic look.

Glass Cabinet Doors

Glass-front doors give cabinets an elegant look. However, some people are wary of transparent glass because they don’t particularly want people to see what’s in their kitchen cabinets. Some homeowners just don’t have the time or inclination to keep things as tidy as they need to be kept if they’re behind glass. Fortunately, the glass doesn’t have to be transparent. It can be frosted, etched, crackled or even stained and decorated with graceful mullions.

Cabinet Doors With Windows

Cabinet doors with windows are a bit different from cabinets with glass doors. These doors are solid but embellished with a row or rows of little glass windows at the top, bottom or both. There might even be a small, decorative window in the center of the door.

Cabinet Doors With Strong Patterns

Besides colors that are not often seen in the kitchen, kitchen cabinet doors can have striking patterns. Imagine doors with a multicolored herringbone pattern or even colorful vertical or horizontal stripes.

Alternative Types of Doors

Instead of doors that swing out, kitchen cabinet doors can swing up or roll down. This is much like the way garage doors open. You can also opt for mini barn doors.
